The art of bakhoor: an Emirati welcome

How scented wood chips became the heart of hospitality, and how to burn them at home.

In an Emirati home, bakhoor is the first thing a guest notices and the last thing they remember. Wood chips soaked in fragrant oils are warmed over charcoal until a soft, resinous smoke fills the majlis.

How to burn bakhoor at home

  • Light a charcoal disc in a mabkhara (incense burner) and wait until it is covered in white ash.

  • Place one or two pieces of bakhoor on the charcoal. A little goes a long way.

  • Let the smoke drift through the room, or pass the burner under clothes and through the hair.

  • Pillar candles with a wisp of smoke beside a reed diffuser
